Dave Matthews Band – Recently (1994)

posted by record facts

Recently is an EP by the Dave Matthews Band, released in 1994. All songs are live recordings. “Recently” is an edit of the live version found on Remember Two Things, recorded at The Flood Zone in Richmond, VA on August 10, 1993; “Dancing Nancies” and “Warehouse” were recorded at The Birchmere in AlexandriaVirginia on February 21, 1994; “All Along the Watchtower” and “Halloween” were recorded at Trax in CharlottesvilleVirginia on February 22, 1994.

Recently was initially sold only to fan club members. A captivating and enthralling release, the Dave Matthews Band put forth a strong effort to produce a record that identified their personality, blending a mix of soulful grooves and eclectic percussive rhythms to create a majestic portrait of musical art. Even at this point in the group’s career, each member seemed to be a gifted virtuoso at his instrument. Leroi Moore, educated in the art of jazz, lights up the beauty and richness of the sax on the EP’s full-band tracks, while Carter Beauford deepens the band’s texture with an overwhelming but alluring presence of rhythms. Boyd Tinsley is both elegant and colorful on violin, and Stefan Lessard jams with shimmering brilliance on bass. Also notable in the cameo made by accomplished guitarist/arranger extraordinaire Tim Reynolds, who shares the spotlight in the acoustic tune “Dancing Nancies.” Most importantly, this record grants the listeners an early look at the Dave Matthews Band’s strength as a live band, which would later be displayed on a number of longer, multi-disc concert releases. It’s interesting to dial things back, however — to hear the mysterious and haunting cover of “All Along the Watchtower” for the first time, to discover the early arrangements of some future concert staples, and to hear the band enjoying itself in its former hometown haunt of Trax in Charlottesville, VA.

The Recently promo with this cover was released before the EP itself and features different tracks, including an alternate edit of the title song. The promotional release, informally referred to as the “Pumpkin Recently,” is currently one of the rarest releases in the band’s catalog.

Dave Matthews Band – Weekend On The Rocks (2005)

posted by albums-update

Weekend on the Rocks is a live album by Dave Matthews Band. It contains highlights of the four shows in four days the band performed at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on September 9–12, 2005. The set is packaged on two CDs and one DVD. However, a complete recording of the four shows, entitled The Complete Weekend on the Rocks, is available on eight discs. This is the second officially released live recording of Dave Matthews Band concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The first was Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95.

The Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado loves Dave Matthews. This is the second live recording from Red Rocks he’s released in a decade. Weekend on the Rocks is a two-CD/single-DVD compilation from four concerts at the venue. It’s a teaser for the complete concerts available as an eight-CD set that contains the same DVD.
The tracks chosen here are not obvious choices, and that’s a good thing — thankfully there’s not yet another version of “Ants Dancing.”
The band is pumped here, and includes Fender Rhodes and P-organ master Butch Taylor guesting for the gig. Just listening to the woolly, loose, and actually gritty version of “American Baby” included here sounds like a different band. The ragged version of the Zombies‘ classic “Time of the Season,” should have been left off; they just can’t manage the vocals — the upper register they try to hit here is embarrassing. The jam-out in the middle of the cut is also unnecessary.
But the 16-and-a-half-minute version of “Bartender” that closes disc one is a monster. The playing is passionate, gutsy, and as edgy as this band ever gets. The wall of strummed acoustic guitars on “You Never Know,” offers an ethereal base for Matthews heartfelt singing. And it’s followed by the funk and roll of “Stand Up (For It),” slithering and sexual.

After this, sequencing gets weird. Granted, trying to boil four nights and eight CDs’ worth of material down to two is a real challenge. But after the intensity of “Stand Up (For It),” is it really necessary to place a 15-plus-minute version of “#41”? Ugh. “Louisiana Bayou,” and “Everyday,” fare far better as extended versions that close the set.
It has to be said, however, that there is still something missing here and its not only continuity. This band always sounds like they’re trying to break out into something raw, and wild and crazy, but they’re so mannered, they never, ever get there. Hardcore fans will want this since they need everything including bootlegs, but for the rest of us, Weekend on the Rocks is piece of curiosa

Dave Matthews Band – Europe 2009 (3CD) (2010)

europe

Dave Matthews Band (often abbreviated to DMB) is an American rock band that was formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. The founding members were singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard, drummer/backing vocalist Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore. Boyd Tinsley was added to the band as a violinist soon after the band was formed. Moore died suddenly in August 2008 due to complications from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. Grammy Award-winner Jeff Coffin[4] (of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones) has since filled Moore’s spot as the band’s saxophonist. Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds have also become full-time members of the band.
The three-CD/one-DVD set Europe 2009 captures two different concerts: the CDs chronicles a July 5 concert in Lucca, Italy, and the DVD documents a June 26 show at the O2 Academy Brixton in London, England. Both concerts were given not long after the release of the band’s 2009 album Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King, so it’s not surprising that both draw deeply from that record. More interesting for longtime DMB fans, though, is that this is the first official document of the band after the death of saxophonist LeRoi Moore. The group reckoned with his passing on Big Whiskey, but in some ways, Europe 2009 offers a truer illustration of how they’re dealing with his absence, with the group finding some new twists and surprises within expected classics, seemingly gaining sustenance from the music while remaining a crowd-pleasing jam band.
The concert featured on the DVD was at Brixton Academy in London, on June 26, 2009. Tim Reynolds, who resumed touring with the band in 2008, appears on both the audio discs and the DVD.
